Every time my grandma comes, she remarks, "So you don't have your ears pierced, either?" I kindly remind her that nothing has changed since the last time. "I thought all little girls wanted their ears pierced." I tell her that I'm not so much a little girl. "Well, even if you aren't, why wouldn't you want to get them pierced?" This time I tell her that mom got infections when she pierced hers. "But that was back in the 60s. Things are much more sterile now. And having your ears pierced is so much better than those darned clip-ons." I ask her why one needs to wear earrings. If those darned clip-ons are such a problem, why wear them to begin with? She discarded my question. "When I die, who am I going to give all my earrings to?" As I always answer the question I brought up her other glamorous granddaughter who lives in North Carolina and would probably love grandma's jewelry.
There are other things I'd rather have.
She left me alone...until next time.
