Today we had no school, so Megan and I took a bike ride. I wanted to go along the ditch, but we couldn't. There were workers all over, tearing out trees from the ditch. The small part that they had already finished was so barren and empty. Its life had been sucked out of it. All those animals - rodents, stray cats, foxes, snakes, coyotes, birds - are being robbed of their little ecosystem. Does this make me a tree hugger? Maybe... (don't tell mom)...
We went a different way and rode up to the cemetery. It's a newer cemetery, but if you pick the right places you can usually find some older graves. Many of the graves had leftovers from el dia de los muertos, while others already had holiday wreaths.
I finally found little Corey's grave. Corey was a sweet little boy whose bother was in my class at JN and our religion teacher was related to him, too. He had leukemia and holes in his heart. He died two days after our eighth grade graduation this past May. We prayed for him and make him cards when he wasn't feeling well. The headstone was beautiful, but I couldn't get a great picture of it because of the sun. Someone had placed flowers there recently. Now that I know where it is I have a reason to visit the cemetery....
